What is a Pressurised Hot Water System: (Reliance Controls, more info)
Pressurised hot water systems, such as Megaflo, are the equivalent to the older existing copper hot water cylinders commonly found in the UK.
The Megaflo system, is fed directly from the mains cold water supply, and is therefore working at the mains pressure supplied from the local water authority from the supplies in the road.
This has huge advantages over the older type of hot water system:
No water tanks required in loft
The whole house is fed with clean fresh cold water
High pressure hot and cold water supplies all over the house
No requirements for shower pumps, or artificial pressure
Can be fitted virtually anywhere in the property
Excellent performance with thermostatic shower mixer valves
Rapid heat recovery times between usage
Highly efficient, with low heat losses
Stainless steel construction, with long lifespan, and long warranties
Ideal for use with renewable energy sources such as Solar Panels
However, to utilise the Megaflo to it’s full potential, the unit has to be installed correctly.
Even though, the ‘Part G3’ qualification is aimed at this specific type of system, the standard of installation in our experience is appalling!
The level of basic knowledge is dismal at best, and as far as repairs and maintenance is concerned, you really are taking a gamble on who or what’s going to turn up at the door..
I would estimate that 75% of installations we visit are incorrect. It’s critical the safety controls are installed, checked, and operate correctly, or the results could be catastrophic.
This is the sort of damage an unvented cylinder can do.
Potentially, they can be explosive and volatile. ESPECIALLY if they haven’t been installed correctly, or correctly maintained.
A typical story, from Haywards Heath, Sussex.
We had an e-mail from Mat, and his really nice family in Haywards Heath, who’d been without hot water for weeks. Coupled with a problem of the basement flooding every day, due to the safety discharge pipework not being installed, they’d had a bit of a nightmare!
Despite the local company who had installed the system, returning 16 times... Yes, 16 times! the problems were increasing in regularity, and severity.
We did our best to help via e-mails and photos, but in the end we decided to pay them a visit.
It took less than 5 minutes to diagnose the problems, and 5 hours work for Mike, on a return visit, to re-install the Megaflo correctly, and more importantly, safely!
How hard is it to read the instructions? And fit the parts that come in the box!
TRADING STANDARDS APPROVED
In response to concerns about ‘rogue traders’ which are often highlighted in the media, a partnership of Local Authority Trading Standards Offices have taken the groundbreaking step of putting together the Buy With Confidence Scheme.
The scheme provides a list of local businesses which have given their commitment to trading fairly.
Each business listed has undergone a series of rigorous checks and audits before being approved as a member of the scheme.
