Well where to begin?

I left school at the age of sixteen to enter a British Gas apprenticeship, and from there on my fate was sealed and a lifetime of fixing and installing gas appliances ensued.  After 34 years in the business however, I took some time out and semi-retired into a lecturing post at a local college; this move enabled me to share the extensive knowledge that I had gained in my extensive career and help promote to newcomers in the gas industry, and the values and integrity that I hold in terms of customer service and care.  It was here that I met Chris, a fellow lecturer and expert in his field; it was this union of shared morals and knowledge that planted the seeds for SW8, although we were not aware of this at the time.

The moment that the seed began to grow was the summer of 2010.  After several years ‘off the shop floor’ so to speak, I began to get calls from old customers who had somehow tracked me down and were telling me of their failed attempts of locating a reasonably priced, honest and qualified engineer.  So, I struck on the thought of building a webpage that would give the public a bit of a ‘heads up’ and loaded it with lots of information about Vaillant boilers and their faults and intricacies, and tips that would avoid customers from being ripped off.  I then added my e-mail address so that people could ask me specific questions and I found myself getting home from work and spending my evenings resolving people’s boiler problems on line.   I then made the fatal error of publishing my mobile phone number on the site!  The response was staggering and I was no longer able to deal with queries in my evenings alone.  So, Chris started to help me out and responded to those enquiries that were specific to his expertise.

It was now that the itchy feet syndrome started to kick in.  Both of us stuck in classroom all day and chomping at the bit to get involved into some ‘hands on’ bread and butter work that we had originally been trained to do.  We had both come to realise by now, that the levels of knowledge, experience and even the most basic aspects of heating and plumbing held by some of the people advertising their services, were abysmal to say the least; a view enforced by not only the poor level of knowledge held by engineers entering the college, but the calls we were receiving from the public who had been ‘ripped off’ time and time again by companies providing sub standard work for extortionate prices.  Now we were faced with a dilemma, did we plough our efforts into training those engineers to a competent level or did we break free from the constraints of a teaching environment and return to the industry that we excel in?  Well, like modern day super heroes, we chose to continue with our regular professions by day and then by night (and weekends) we would transform ourselves into manual workers, visiting the homes of the distressed and needy and putting the world to rights!!

For someone that thrives on challenges, the satisfaction of identifying a problem and fixing it where those before me had failed, was absolutely second to none.  Far greater, I’m afraid, than the satisfaction of enabling an apprentice to refine his own skills; and so, my seedling had another growth spurt and I began to reduce my hours at the college and spend more time not only engineering, but rebuilding and enhancing my original website.  One applemac computer and various software packages later, I found myself becoming totally absorbed by the power of the internet and the technology available and began to build more and more websites focussing on different areas of specialism and services.  The response from the general public who have accessed these sites has been phenomenal and once again, highlighted and reinforced for us the dire need for more companies that work on the basis of value and integrity.  The horror stories that were filtering through to us, and still are, were absolutely destroying; I could easily fill 30 to 40 pages with tales submitted by people that have experienced not only being totally ripped off, but their boilers left in a condition that could have proved fatal.

Twelve months in to building our small, part time business, I received an enquiry from an individual who wanted to invest in our 2-man band company.  Impressed by the quality of work that he had received from us, he was keen to put his own money into financing the expansion of the business; clearly seeing the potential and, probably quite mercenary, able to project a significant return in his investment.  Whilst flattered and excited at the initial prospect of finding myself in the ‘Dragon’s Den’ and having my own ‘Dragon’ to finance my aspiring business, I quickly came down to earth with a bump and was certain that I did not want to run a company that was committed to targets and high returns, nor did I want to submit any control to a silent partner, who may not have shared my own vision.  What the offer did do though, was to open my eyes to the fact that I had to push this business forward.  It was not sustainable on a part-time basis and if an investor believed in me, then I needed to believe in myself.  And so, together with my trusty side kick Chris, the idea of SW8 Associates was born.  In the enviable position of having access to some of the finest up and coming engineers that had come through the college and being fortunate enough to have worked with some engineers previously that are known to have the same extensive knowledge and values as ourselves, we were able to build a small, but perfectly formed, team of expertise.

It is with this team, and the added addition of a much needed secretary and the leasing of an office, that SW8 will commence trading in January.   We are excited and enthusiastic about providing a much needed service to you, the general public, and providing that service in an honest, efficient and productive manner.  Unfortunately, the expansion of the company has forced us to go VAT registered and that is now reflected in our prices.  However, we will attempt to keep charges as low and as reasonable as possible and it is our mantra that we will never charge an hourly rate.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank those customers that have encouraged and supported us in taking this step and assure you that the excellent service you have experienced thus far, will continue.

Kind regards.
